Being over ten years since I read Pride and Prejudice (for scholastic purposes, of course) I was in the mood for a period drama. You know that feeling? You can hear classical music in your head? You start speaking in long, complicated sentences with a tinge of pomposity and British air? Just me? Hmmm....

Sense and Sensibility was a good choice. Our heroine, if she can be categorized so highly, is a lovely young lady with a sensible head on her shoulders and a sensitive heart occasionally prone to Being over ten years since I read Pride and Prejudice (for scholastic purposes, of course) I was in the mood for a period drama. Sense and Sensibility was a good choice. Our heroine, if she can be categorized so highly, is a lovely young lady with a sensible head on her shoulders and a sensitive heart occasionally prone to the dramatic shows of emotion and despair. (Although a 'sad fit' in Austen's world differs somewhat to the ways I tend to throw myself on the floor when scorned by an insensitive lover...)Elinor is great. You will like her.

The younger sister, Marianne, is a trial at times but as is the case with many an Austen character, stick with them and they may surprise you. The mother also is cracking value, but the youngest sister doesn't do much. Like really, I think she just kind of sits around waiting till the day she can attend a dinner party like everyone else.

Anyway, without too long a description of characters, names, places, and events - I get bored reading those reviews sometimes too - following a change of scenery for Elinor and her clan, we are met with new relationships, issues of the kind to give love and romance a fat, juicy go at wrecking the lives of vulnerable and naive young women, and of course a few male characters who fail to rouse. The men that end up locking themselves in as answers to the matrimonial question are, well, underwhelming. A bunch of wet mops if I was to put it bluntly. They did nothing to raise the colour of my skin. In fact, I want to sit down with Elinor and Marianne and say 'girls, come on. You will be so bored and unsatisfied in a couple of years. At least have a few more adventures before you settle down with Mr. Plain Dress pants and Mr. Sensible Shoes'.

But I digress. It was a great read and in typical Jane Austen style, the necessity of the extra-long, paragraph size sentences reigned supreme, and although there was no swoon worthy hero to quicken my breath, I enjoyed the stories and dynamics enough to get involved in the slab of drama unfolding.
