I went through a huge vampire phase when I was a teenager yet somehow I haven't picked this book up until now.
I'll be honest, for the first fifth or so of the book I really wasn't into it. I found the characters to be whiny and annoying, and I just wasn't grabbed by the story or the writing. Then all of a sudden, like the flick of a switch, it got great and I really enjoyed the rest of the book! I had considered DNFing it but I'm glad I stuck with it.

85% of this book is boring, extremely slow and overly descriptive, 10% interesting action, and 5% a very dissatisfying ending. Being a reader, it's mentioned on many lists, so once started, I was determined to finish, if not for that I would not have finished it. This is one case where the movie is way better than the book.
