The second after I finished reading it, I was like, this book has to be 5 stars! But then I remembered that much of the book prior to that was more of a slow burn. Maybe a little too slow, though. I feel like the fist ~100 pages did a really great job at building up the horror elements and tension between the characters. And then the tension continued to build...but not the horror elements so much. The last 50 pages of the book was quite a ride, though. So if you are able to push past the slower

Great fictional retelling of the Donner Party with a supernatural twist. The writing was smooth and the characters were interesting so I had no problem busting out 100 pages a day. This book sets a great creepy atmosphere, and while there are some gruesome parts, it felt like the true horror was kept just beyond view. I wanted things to go off the rails insane, but the author prefers a more subtle approach.
