I didn't know I was getting two books in one. The Princess Bride story is worth close to 5 stars. The How I Abridged This Book story rates near 1 star. Thus, a 3 star average. My advice? Watch the movie. It's brilliant.

I give it three stars because it inspired one of my all-time favorite movies. However, I liked the characters less in the book than the movie, not really caring for either of the main protagonists. Rarely will I say this... watch the movie, it's much better.

Whilst I enjoyed this book, I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to, although that, as they say, is my problem. Probably has something to do with the film which, somewhat sensibly, cut down on a lot of narrative fat and downplayed Goldman's sardonic voice in favour of Peter Falk's irascible but essentially loveable grandfather, although it was good to see that all of the good bits made it from the book to the screenplay (understandable, given Goldman did both).
