So, I really wish Saramago would just use normal dialogue punctuation and convention. I can’t see that his style gains much from the way he does it and it’s mildly confusing - not enough to actually cause difficulty but enough to be annoying.

It's a funny book, both in terms of eschewing punctuation and paragraphs (which makes it a bugger to read at times, mainly around dialogue), and in terms of actual humour, although the Old Testament is such an easy target, it can't be that hard to highlight the multiple foolishnesses within it. But Saramago is such an avuncular narrator it's a pleasure spending time with him, and he certainly seems to have thought a lot about donkeys...
