I think this is my third time reading this - I definitely reread t before the last of the trilogy and possibly before the second. The world conjured up by Pullman is a wonderful one, but on my second go at reading, I still struggle to understand why this is a seen as a children's book. Yes, the protagonist is 11 years old, but it's no more a children's book than To Kill A Mockingbird is. The adventures and characters are great, but given so much of the plot revolves around fairly esoteric philosophical and theological matters, I really can't see what appeal that has to kids. "...I definitely stayed up way too late on some nights, just because I didn't want to put the book down, and I was a little sad when I finished it; it ends with a lot of action and mystery, and I look very forward to reading the second book in the trilogy so I can find out what happens next for Lyra and Pan, and see who, if any, of the other characters might also be around.
