Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series is a favorite of mine. Maisie is a thoughtful "intuitive detective" with a complex back story and the large cast of characters adds layers of interest. Hooray for Maisie! While this book seems to divide readers, I am thumbs up. Many seem to be annoyed that we have skipped a few happy years in her story, but those of us who know the arc of fiction and the need for conflict to spark action are not dismayed to rejoin our heroine at a time of sorrow.
