Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series is a favorite of mine. Maisie is a thoughtful "intuitive detective" with a complex back story and the large cast of characters adds layers of interest. The things I learn about WWI and the time period in-between that and WWII are part of the draw for me. This one, #11 in the series, takes place in Gibralter/Spain in 1938 toward the end of the Spanish Civil War. I was looking forward to this book, though I admit I was at first disappointed when I discovered that it took place on Gibraltar rather than in India which is where Maisie had been headed after the end of the last Maisie Dobb's novel, Leaving Everything Most Loved. A number of the reviews here on Goodreads went far beyond disappointment. 3.5 stars. In "A Dangerous Place," Maisie is still going through a difficult time. She spent some time in Darjeeling, India and decides to come back to England to face her new life. When she stops in Gibraltar, she realizes that she is not ready to go back yet and decides to stay in Gibraltar where new dangers await her.
