There are so many themes in this book. It opens up with an extremely sad story and throws quite unexpectedly at you all of the problems of the main character. Once it has gotten your full attention, you are ready to follow Celie through the rest of her life. And it is quite a life. Everything is constantly moving until the last few pages. This was my second time reading the Color Purple - I swear I don't remember it being this good?! It could be that I was too immature the first time because this is certainly a novel that deals with complex subjects -race, gender, sexuality, sexual violence, faith, my goodness.

I was very young the first time I read this so I thought I’d give it another shot. I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time around, however, the changes that happen to Nettie during her last year or so before she reunites with Celie are not as believable as the other events that take place throughout the story.
