Re-read this in 2024 on audio and it packs a punch. Very personal narrative history written as a message to his son on the way our society functions itself on the history and butalization on Black bodies, on the lessons that Coates tried to teach his son growing up while also observing what his son experiences.
"Between the World and Me" is an apt title, it's candid, illuminating and intimate in a way that's stayed with me even now. 5 stars. Full review to come.

There really are no words to describe this book. I cannot review his writing or the meaning of this book because this is a letter to his 15 year old son. This is a book describing how Ta-Nehisi views his world and the world in which he son will soon come to understand for himself.

I do believe that every American should read this book because it gives honest and valid points as to why African Americans view the world we live in the way we do... there is no security, there is no freedom, there is

A powerful and beautifully written book! Coates navigates through the entwined pride anger and fear that comes with living in a place where systemic racism threatens black lives. This father's words to his son - and to the world - are well worth the reading. ...more

A true story about life as a black man to his son. This story is a riveting piece about racism and how it affects his life from an early age to 2015. From the streets of Baltimore to Ferguson. Couldn't put it down. ...more

This was excellent!! I highly recommend it. Written as a letter to his teenage son and what knowledge and insight was put in these pages. Deep, inspiring and moving. This book made me re-think a lot of my history.

This was a very insightful listen. I wish the audiobook was narrated by a different person though. I didn't jive with the narrators voice. ...more

I went into this not knowing what the content would be. I picked it out as a library read and read it, description unread. It fits with my 2019 theme of racial reads. It is also by far the best book I've read that breaks down what is at the heart of racial issues. It gives me perspective that I wouldn't have otherwise had.

I'm suggesting everyone read this. Library read. I'm putting it on my list to have for my shelves. I'm also going to find other Coates' books and devour them. His perspective
