Snoozefest.
I was bored and couldn't wait for the book to be over. I was ready to give up at 30%. Even the romance part couldn't keep me interested 😐
Speedread the rest...no apologies.

If someone would have explained the plot of this to me, I probably would have said it doesn't sound like my thing. I'm usually not into just hearing about a bunch of rich people fake nice and gossip and count money and all that, but this was so entertaining. They were pretty funny. I'll continue the series.

Thoroughly enjoyed this novel, though the ad nauseam descriptions of excess could get a bit tiresome. The characters were fun, the intrigue of the various family connections absurdly addictive (the family tree graphic in the front was very much appreciated!), and the love story sweet. Reading this book felt like bingewatching a season of a prime time soap opera. I look forward to seeing the film and reading the rest of the series. 4 stars.
I don’t often read romantic melodramas, but this one took me by surprise! I enjoyed reading about the ultra-rich, both when satirized or when the truth was told.
My main critique is that the protagonists were not as developed as I thought they would be. I was still rooting for the three main leads / perspectives (Rachel, ...more

I was expecting a trashy romantic novel but ended up finding the depictions of Chinese culture, stereotypes, and food very interesting. I really appreciate the novel and the movie raising awareness towards diversity. The plot line itself and the focus on appearances and materialism are not something I agree with, though one could argue that that is the "crazy" rich culture and Asian culture that the author is mocking. That said, who else hates the ending? It's abrupt and (view spoiler)

I wanted to read this book before I watched the movie. It started out so promising and I laughed out loud at the opening scene; however it definitely didn't suck me in. There were many times that I rolled my eyes rather than appreciating the satire and sarcasm. Though this wasn't for me; it took me two borrows of the audio book to finish it, I will probably give the movie a try anyways.
