1/18/2023: I first read The Sentence six months ago, then reread it with my mother's book club. I loved it the first time and was still enraptured. The Sentence feels authentic and generous-hearted. It is a love letter to books and an angry one about injustice of many forms.

I've waited too long to do a proper review of The Sentence but suffice it to say it pleasantly surprised me in many ways. I wasn't paying attention to what it was about - I only knew it was a story about a ghost inhabiting Erdrich's real life bookstore, Birchbark Books in Minneapolis.
May 18, 2023: I finally got a picture of the Birchbark Books confessional today that features in this book! I love the admonition for keeping out of it: "our insurance doesn't cover damnation". :)))

My first Louise Erdrich book—though not her most well known. Takes place in a bookstore (love) and contains so many book recommendations that it would probably take me years to get through them all.
I can’t wait to read more of Erdrich’s work as well as some of the books mentioned in this story.
