I've waited too long to do a proper review of The Sentence but suffice it to say it pleasantly surprised me in many ways. I wasn't paying attention to what it was about - I only knew it was a story about a ghost inhabiting Erdrich's real life bookstore, Birchbark Books in Minneapolis.
May 18, 2023: I finally got a picture of the Birchbark Books confessional today that features in this book! I love the admonition for keeping out of it: "our insurance doesn't cover damnation". :)))

Nothing makes Penstemon happier than handing a favorite book to someone who wants to read it. I’m the same. I suppose you could say this delights us although ‘delight’ is a word I rarely use. Delight seems insubstantial; happiness feels more grounded; ecstasy is what I shoot for; satisfaction is hardest to attain.
