Okay... so...

It's just.... okay.

Well, a lot of it is pacing and descriptions. There was a LOT of description and I get it. It's a book about a magical Night Circus brought to life, it needs something to bring it to life! But it was just too much in my opinion (but I am biased because I don't like over descriptive things, I'm more minimal to make my own picture in my mind.)

Second, the romance... once again, another romance that was just, eh? Why? Because I saw NOTHING rom (Probably some spoilers.)

Second, the romance... once again, another romance that was just, eh? Why? Because I saw NOTHING romantic between the two, minus a "Oh heehee we're having a deep chat!" once or twice and then all of a sudden, "I love you and will do anything for you!" Kay. SHOW ME, DON'T TELL ME. That's what this literally was.

Third, this was supposed to be a "duel to the death" type deal but... they always WORKED TOGETHER? There was never any, "Wow I better watch my back, he's probably going to kill me." or "I wonder what this chick is going to come up with next, it's probably crazy!" No, it was, "Wow, she built a merry-go-round and I made that Ice Garden! Jeepers! Such a great duel!" Kay.

Also, I don't understand the "has to die" part because the last game went on for a long time until someone committed suicide. Why couldn't they just go through life, continue building on each other and then die in love or whatever? That way, one of them wins. And the whole, "Well the circus will fall apart without them!" Her batshit crazy dad even said, "That's just the stage, you don't really need it." So just shut the circus down or whatever. Especially when people started to die.

And the convenient plot point of Bailey just being there to wrap it all up. Well, um, okay. If you say so! Dude is like 16 and just signed his whole fucking life away in 5 minutes. I feel bad for that dude, if I signed my life away at 16 to anything, I would have hated the rest of my life. Also, Celia JUST SO HAPPENING to be able to do magic even her father couldn't to SAVE BOTH OF THEM, hooray for the biggest Mary Sue shit ever.

This book is like a puzzle I can't put together. I'm sure all the pieces collectively make a really lovely picture, but without being able to see it all, they're a bit useless and a bit frustrating.

Even over halfway through the book, I still had the sense I didn't really know what was going on. But that's ok I guess, because the characters didn't seem to either. This books moves REALLY slow and revealing what is actually going on, and while that might be titilating for some, for me it is just fr ...more

I decided to read this book simply because it's quite popular. I don't usually read books based on hype, and this is why.

What I did really like about this book was Bailey, Poppet, and Widget. I don't have any criticisms of them, they were great and the reasons why I kept reading.

I wasn't expecting to love this book but I was expecting to like it more than I actually did, so that's disappointing. I just wasn't feeling this. Overall, I think this book just wasn't for me.

Well this book took me quite a while to get through. Fantasy is not my favourite genre. I think that once I got into the story of Marcos and Celia I started liking the book more. I found the whole notion of the competition a bit hard to follow - how it tied in with the circus and the other characters ... but eventually it came together.
