Sometimes, some books just don't lend themselves to an analytical, opinionated review. This book was 4.5 stars (I always round up). I liked this book a lot. The dates and how the story unfolds out of order is different and kept me more engaged once I realized this was the case. As stated in my comments, Widge and Poppet were my favorite characters even though they weren't primary characters. Despite this, I still liked Celia and Marco. Their story was complex and different. The circus itself is beautiful and the writing lush and descriptive (generally) but no matter how wondrous the circus is it can't make up for the lack of plot or real characters. I had no emotional connection to any with the exception (barely) of Bailey who really isn't the main character. I definitely enjoyed it until the lack of plot slowly stole what energy it had and I slogged through the second half even the climax was a slow read. Listened to the book on Audible. So first would just say I’m conflicted on the reader. At first I thought the voice was perfect for a Victorian era book about a mysterious circus. But I did get annoyed that so many of the voices (including young women and children), came out as hoarse old men.
I read the book because of recommendations from friends and it’s appearance on a few lists of books with excellent writing. It really was quite good in that regard, though not as I’d expected. While I imag ...more
