What Members Thought
Well, this was a very hard book to read. Everything about it felt so raw and real that when something bad happened it felt like a punch to the gut.
First of all, I was surprised to find no trigger warning for sexual assault. Even if it was not descriptive, there should've been one. Coming up to the event suddenly left me so shaken I couldn't pick up the book again for a week. I actually thought about not finishing it because the things Daunis had to go through were unbearable. This was a good, solid book with, what may be, the most beautiful cover of the year. I listened to it on audio and even at a higher speed, it took a long time to finish. Maybe I would feel differently if I'd read it, but it just seemed too long and repetitive in parts.

So good! Written by a Chippewa author giving the authenticity to the writing and understanding of the culture and traditions. This novel is more than just a story, it touches on many of the challenges the indigenous face in Canada and the quite reasonable mistrust of the government's motivations. All too often the results of governments intrusiveness results in further damage completely disregarding the thin attempts to rebuild the trust between the two. More novels like this should be shared wi

This story really sucked me in. It does a great job of showing all angles, the good and the bad. It's really realistic. I love the main character. I felt so sad for her sometimes and so inspired by her most of the time. ...more
