Why do people stand up in the face of wrongs, even when afraid? This fictionalized biography of the Mirabal sisters answers this question, providing sympathetic, well-drawn portraits without sainting them in the process, an easy response to martyrs.

I really have no words to describe this book. It is based on the true story of the murder of the three Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic in 1994. Alvarez used fact along with some creative fiction to create the individual personalities of the sisters. I cried throughout the last 50 pages. We know from the beginning how this book is going to end but still we aren't prepared. As I've said often in my reviews of multicultural literature "Every culture has their own struggle".

I'm ashamed to say, before picking up this book I knew abosolutely nothing about the Dominican Republic or the regime of Trujillo. Sadly, it seems there have been so many dictators in modern history that some of them become smaller and more commonplace. This novel opened a new area of interest for me into another country's history and culture, and the story of The Butterflies.

The story of sisters living in the Dominican Republic who were politically persecuted. Extremely moving.
