Let me start by saying, that's not at all what I expected. Yes, the quality of the writing was all Toni Morrison, but of the six novels of hers I have now read, this had the most contemporary of settings. I'd hate to say I had typecast Morrison as a historical novelist, but... I typecast Morrison as a historical novelist. So it took me a little while to get into the rhythm of Tar Baby. Musings on Living
Morrison's writing is once again so beautiful, so descriptive she really transports the reader to wherever the setting may be. In Tar Baby, it's the rich lands of the Caribbean. Not only is the writing exquisite, the characters are incredibly multidimentional.
This book really reflects on love, in all it's many forms, from romantic, to parental, to even your own pride and vanity (love of self). I wonder if it's almost a cautionary tale, warning the reader of what to look out for. Addressing love

Morrison's language is, per her usual, absolutely stunning. And I loved the treatment of themes and tensions of race and class (intra- and inter-). I didn't really like the plot sequence/ pacing, though. But I'm still so glad I read it, and I would recommend to anyone that already likes Toni Morrison. ...more
