What Members Thought

Death--with a wry sense of humor and haunted by humans, at least one human--has plenty to keep him (?) busy, yet still is fascinated by one human's responses to the inhumane around her. Both Death and this human see their worlds with a poetic, almost Dali-esque voice, transforming rather than avoiding the pain. Chance and ill luck, the healing nature of relationships, the power of words and reading. A painful, but beautiful book.

Wow! Just, Wow!
I know I'm late to the party and most have read this book by now, but somehow this book always eluded me. I had no idea who the narrator was, the plot of the book (except it is set in the WWII era), who the main character was, etc. I am so glad I didn't know. I had no expectations going in, except that everyone I knew who read it said it was one of their favourite books ever. Now, it's one of mine too.
I won't say anything here about the plot, characters, story line, setting, etc. ...more

Saumensch will ever be a word in my vocabulary to remember Rosa rough love for Liesel, the book thief and word shaker. If none of this makes sense to you, its because you have to read this novel set in WWII Germany. The power of words to give hope, to destroy and to redeem is at the heart of this novel, a novel that I will never forget. This novel should be required reading for everyone.

This book was a slow read for me and then it picked up full speed then it just ended. I'm not a fan of how this book ended.

I don't have any words to express how much I loved this book, and what an adventure it was to read it.
