Sometimes we fail at our humanity. And when such times are over, we can't wrap our minds around what has happened, how it has gone this far, how the blazing hells we allowed things to happen the way they have.

Death--with a wry sense of humor and haunted by humans, at least one human--has plenty to keep him (?) busy, yet still is fascinated by one human's responses to the inhumane around her. Both Death and this human see their worlds with a poetic, almost Dali-esque voice, transforming rather than avoiding the pain. Chance and ill luck, the healing nature of relationships, the power of words and reading. A painful, but beautiful book.
