What Members Thought

One of the best books that I’ve read in the past 12 months. This is an epic. Decades and attitudes change.
The novel starts with a simple setting, a church, a brimstone and fire sermon, kicking a girl out of her town and forcing her to move to the big city.
In Dublin Catherine Goggin, delivers a child and he is adopted by the Avery’s. And life goes up and down for Cyril Avery our main character who is on a path to search for his real parents and the story of his life. But along the way there are ...more

Born to a unwed teenager in the Irish countryside, expelled from the Catholic Church and her family to fend for herself and unborn child. This book is told with a se ...more

PEARL RULE #6 (p381)
Rating: 3* of five
The Publisher Says: Cyril Avery is not a real Avery or at least that’s what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn’t a real Avery, then who is he?
Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinite ...more
