What Members Thought

I like books with family stories but it was very dull at some parts.
For me the start was really exciting with the grandparents.
The when they got to America it dragged for me. Over abundance of information.
Picked up towards the end again when it was more about Cal's discovery.

Interesting storyline. Excellent writing. I wish there had been more story devoted to the issue of gender identification as opposed to all the family history (and their rationalization that in-breeding was somehow ok in their situation.) It lost a star for me because of this.

MIDDLESEX by Jeffrey Eugenides was originally published in 2002; (21 years ago) and was very much ahead of his time in regards to the inclusion of a gender-diverse LGBTQIA2S+ character.
I remember reading this for the first time when it was first released and the flurry of responses to the book were polarizing. People either loved it, or loathed it; there was zero middle-ground.
Rereading this 21 years later (and hopefully as a much more mature and informed reader) is fascinating.
