This is a beautiful book set in Afghanistan which examines the intricacies of human relationships and capacity. Mariam and Laila come from much different backgrounds and circumstances, but they become friends and family through tragic circumstances.
Mariam is an illegitimate child of a servant, who suffers from epilepsy as well as some mental illness and Laila is a pampered child in an educated family.
