What Members Thought

I read The Round House, shortly after it won a National Book Award. While it is the second in a loose trilogy, it stood well on its own. Earlier this month I read Plague of Doves, the first, in preparation for reading LaRose, the third, which hadn't yet been released (but has now been). I appreciated Plague, but the structure of Round House – a single coherent, although complex story, with one narrator set in a particular time – made it a much more enjoyable read.

This is a book that you need to stay with, breathe with, give it time to unfold, and it'll reward you. Pay attention to the way the narrative is written, the way it can be slow, desolate, and empty, and then give you moments of deep belly laughter, a pithy adolescent bon mot, a dirty-talking grandmother you wished was your own.
