What Members Thought

In typical John Green fashion, Turtles All The Way Down is a superbly written novel dealing with the touchy subject of mental health, particularly OCD.
He portrays the illness in a brutally honest, refreshing and realistic way due to his own personal experience with this disorder.
Although not my favourite of his books I do highly recommend this young adult novel.

I'm going to preface this review by saying that this will be a fairly long one - because I have a lot of thoughts on "Turtles All the Way Down" and feel like I'm trying to pin them down as much as I can to reflect on my (read: complicated) experience reading it. This is the first book by John Green I've read I think since "The Fault in Our Stars" - which I'll let my review reflect my thoughts on the latter book without going into much detail (suffice to say - I didn't love it and had my reasons)

So...if you too suffer from severe anxiety, you might want to skip this one. The main character takes you down several of her spirals and if you also suffer, you might just find yourself heading down with her.
I read this one FAST. It's typical John Green -- it's good. Not mind-blowing. I didn't cry (and if a book makes me cry, it gets a bonus star...). ...more

Ugh. I continually go into John Green books with high expectations. I'm note even sure why because he has only had one that I have loved - The Fault in Our Stars. I flat out hated An Abundance of Katherines. This one was...well...okay?
Things I liked: the descriptions of OCD and anxiety. I don't have OCD, but I do have anxiety, and I am mom to a child with severe anxiety. Good rep here.
Things I didn't: Ummm...everything else? I don't know. I wish I felt more of anything about this book. I wasn't ...more

There's a lot to like about John Green and a fair bit to be critical of. I appreciate his efforts to deconstruct the Manic Pixie Dream Girl in Looking for Alaska and for giving us a more honest look at teen mortality in A Fault in Our Stars. Turtles All the Way Down, however, is more of a miss for me. Perhaps I shouldn't be looking for realism in YA, but it frustrates me that we keep selling kids and young adults the idea that fantasies will solve their problems rather than building skills. I me

This book does a great job of creating empathy for folks living with mental disorders like OCD. It takes a stab at describing the indescribable and gives you a glimpse at what it must be like to live with a condition like OCD. Very well done.
That being said, the story itself wasn't very interesting. This is a book driven by its wonderful characters, not the mystery or plot. Still worth reading though.

Not the best book that John Greene has written, however he really does write about topics that interest and concern young adults.
