I thought this book was so heartbreaking. I felt an incredible amount of frustration when something horrible happened or when Amir wasn’t doing something that to me was an obvious plan of action. He was flawed, and at times I couldn't stand him. And sometimes the story was so difficult, I had to stop listening. But the characters seemed so much more human to me that way. A beautiful book to learn about human psyche, and life.

This is a book that tries to fool you into thinking that the "hero" is a victim of his circumstances and uses a culture and a country to do so because of an westernized concept of "they have it so bad over there" mentality. There is nothing to like about Amir. He has no feelings for anyone other than himself. He is a coward and self-centered and is willing to see everybody around him get hurt and even die in order to protect himself and his comfort.

I get this is a universally-loved novel, but I couldn't finish it as I found the rape scene horribly graphic and, as a rape survivor myself, incredibly triggering. I apologise if this is a spoiler for anyone (though it does happen relatively early on in the book), but it should come with a trigger warning. I would recommend survivors of any kind of sexual abuse steer clear. ...more
