I am having difficulty rating this book. 5 stars for the beautiful writing but a one star (or less) for the dark, bleak, depressing, hopeless stories featuring unlikable characters. As I turned the last page, I felt in need of a Prozac. I'm surprised it wasn't an Oprah pick!

I love Lahiri's stories of families that immigrate from India to America. This is the first book of hers that I've read, although I saw and loved the movie from her novel The Namesake. I think she is masterful at short story writing. All of these stories, told mainly from the point of view of the children about their experience assimilating, are excellent. I enjoyed some more than others, but all were very good - we learn a lot about these peoples life in a short span.
