Subhash and his younger brother, Udayan grew up in the Tollygunge or the lowland region of Calcutta shortly after the separation in 1947. Think about this book as a pinball game occurring in slow motion, arcing over a period of 50 years and two continents. Much of the motion occurs under the surface: characters react to political and personal events, without fully understanding the dynamics influencing the others. Despite its apparent hopelessness, this book is in some ways optimistic, as healing and growth do occur. Slowly.
