This world has many sorts of closed doors. Some of them people close on themselves, others on people closest to them and on other pepople in general. The most scary part is that I know for a fact that many people's lives either use or are used in some or other variation of such techniques'.

Another dangerous idea implicitly described here is that people tend to be inflexible in their worldview. Just ask someone homeless how 'easy' it is to upgrade back to home life. Ask someone getting better after a potentially life-changing illness how people will perceive them in terms of strength and capabilities. Most of us become adherents of how we have seen the world before. We rarely question our formed perceptions or ask ourselves if we had been wrong or if something has changed along the way. If we see a woman with a 'prolonged history of maniacal depression' we might be not ready to accept her claims of violent treatment, especially when there are no outward signs of just that.

There are things in this world that you can literally shout from rooftops about and no one would believe you. People tend to remember the worst and to expect the best so when you inform them of the worst happening they are not generally inclined to be entirely rational about that. This is probably why the whole situation from this novel is borderline both monstrous and trivial.

This is chilling. Chilling pretty much to the bones. Still fakey a bit. Somehow, I'm not sure this is realistic enough. The cause for such impression is that it's just another general tendency of people to underestimate the pain of mental suffering in comparison to physical. Overall it's a nerve-tickling cautionary tale.

Once outside, I help myself to fruit and pancakes and find a table in the corner, wondering if anyone else in the world has been as fooled by a man as I was. It seems strange that I’ll never be able to tell anyone what I’ve been through, never be able to tell them about the monster I was married to, not if everything turns out as I hope it will.

I walk into the bathroom. The shower stands in the corner, concealed behind opaque doors, which means I can’t use it as there is always the possibility, however slight, that I may come out and find Jack standing on the other side of them. I look at the bath and work out that if I leave the door open, as well as that of the bedroom, I’ll be able to see through to the sitting room and, so, the main door. Reassured, I fill the bath, strip off my clothes and lower myself tentatively into the hot water. As it rises up around my shoulders, the tension that engulfed me the moment I heard Jack step into the house at three o’clock the previous afternoon melts away and I begin to cry in huge racking sobs, which tear from my body at an alarming rate.

This book was ok..... it’s about a man who stalks his perfect women to marry and abuse. Not only is he seeking to abuse his wife but also her disabled sister.

Really enjoyed this one. I listened to it on audio. It's about a couple who on the outside has the perfect marriage and is always together. But unpleasant things happen behind closed doors. You have to read it! Reason I dropped down a star is because the past and present way the story was told did confuse me. ...more

OK, so, I wanted to give this book 5 stars but I am left with a few unanswered questions. I know that there are many relationships that live one way to the public and another way 'behind closed doors'. I appreciate how the author developed this story gradually changing Jack's personality as the story progressed. Many of us have friends who we suspect are living in abusive relationships but in an effort to not get involved or pry we don't talk about it with them. Grace had friends who questioned ...more

This book... this BOOK!! I found myself not able to put it down. It made me so furious and I audibly said “oh shit” probably a hundred times. This is a heart pounding page turner that you just can’t devour fast enough and keeps you so on edge and stressed out. The last couple pages left me in tears.

Absolutely recommend if you’re looking for a disturbing, page turner.

2.5 stars. Not for me, a weaker cup of tea than I’d like. I want black coffee. No dilution. No cream. No sugar.

This book was gifted to me by a client, and I felt obliged to read it, so i can talk to her about it during her next visit.

It’s a very easy read; no nonsense, slightly ridiculous thriller with imho, unlikeable narrators with little dimension and a simple plot-line with too many holes.
A summer beach read, probably featured in Glamour or Cosmopolitan (does that still exist?) Mumsy fict ...more

Sin duda es muy atrapante, lo escuché en un par de días mientras trabajaba y no quería dejarlo por la intriga. Algunas cuestiones de la trama no me convencen del todo, pero está bien armado.
