This is a semi-autobiographical novel about Junior, a teenage boy living on a Spokane Indian reservation in Washington, USA. He experiences many of the problems many teenage boys do, but his story is overlaid with the cultural context of being Native American, and choosing to move to a school outside of the reservation.

I've never read anything about indigenous peoples, so I found the context to this story really interesting. Junior talks about the poverty of his people as well as the high rates

Important read. Exposes readers to aspects of life they likely haven’t experienced before. Not just Native American culture, but poverty, different methods of grieving, and victims of abuse. Alexie’s writing style is engaging and interesting for adults as well as younger audiences.

Great Young Adult book full of wit and insight into the life of a teenage boy growing up on the Spokane reservation. The protagonist's story is somehow both inspiring and very sad. His life is really hard and his family has a lot of bad luck but Junior is determined to make it out. It's a nice quick read. ...more
