Sherman Alexie has written an awesome book. It's the story about a fourteen-year-old Spokane Native American (Arnold Spirit Jr.). It covers topics such as friendship, abuse, alcoholism, death, and teenage sexuality. It covers the issue of ethnicity and the stress it places on the teenage psyche. Arnold Spirit Jr. coped by drawing cartoons. His humor and hope keep him going, plus the love of his family. ...more

Damn you, Sherman Alexie. This book is brilliant m, with the honesty and profanity and grief and humor that will resonate with teens and anyone who was once a teen. It does the important work of reminding people that Native Americans aren’t just historical figures we read about in our white-washed American history classes, but real, actual human beings with problems and joys and tangible lives. Wonderful laugh out loud and cry on the next page story about a heroic Indian boy from a place close to where I live. A book for everyone who is or ever was a teenager!
