What Members Thought
There are so many themes in this book. It opens up with an extremely sad story and throws quite unexpectedly at you all of the problems of the main character. Once it has gotten your full attention, you are ready to follow Celie through the rest of her life. And it is quite a life. Everything is constantly moving until the last few pages. This is one of my favorite books of all time. It was made into a movie that was almost as amazing as the book itself. Oprah even played one of the main characters.
If you have not yet read this book, you need to. It gives readers a look at how life was really lived by slaves, and even free black people in the era of the Civil War.

I was very young the first time I read this so I thought I’d give it another shot. I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time around, however, the changes that happen to Nettie during her last year or so before she reunites with Celie are not as believable as the other events that take place throughout the story.
