This is my second time reading The Color Purple. The abuse and violence to African-American women of the 1930s horrifies me. The placement of women as second class citizens with no rights is appalling. The sisterhood of Celie, Nettie, Shug, Mary Agnes, Sophia, Olivia and Tashi is emotionally charged. I like how the novel is written in a series of letters. Each drawing the reader further into a hyperemotional state. I am thankful to Alice Walker for increasing my horizons.

I really loved this book. It is the story of two sisters. One is a missionary in Africa and the other remains in the South of their childhood. The book unfolds in letters. Through all the time apart, the two sisters still keep each other close to them through letters. Definitely a good read. I'd love to see the musical! ...more
