I am very glad we read this book because North Korea is a country I know very little about. This book was super eye opening. I also had never heard of the human trafficking in China, especially the trafficking of North Koreans.

This book is a book that should be read by everyone. Books like this are why I read. Life in North Korea is unimaginable. The oppression is extreme. As free people, I believe it is our moral obligation to be aware of the injustice in the world and to do what we can to help people like Yeonmi. This book was riveting- the story of a young woman's life in, and escape from, North Korea-- Yeonmi Park has lead an extraordinary life and written a fantastic and eye opening memoir. Her descriptions of the poverty, hunger, and an entire culture built on nationalist propaganda and isolation from any outside media are harrowing and frightening. I chose this book because I recognize that I don't know enough about North Korea and I was drawn to the idea of a direct voice of a North Korean. I listened to the audiobook quickly-partly because it was easy to fly through and also because it was in the last days of the year and I needed to meet my reading goal! The book is well-written and I wasn't surprised to learn a well-known editor is a co-author.
