Once again McCann has written an incredible book centered around a moment in time which is carried through a great number of years. Using a letter carried in an early transatlantic flight the novel brings in a number of very diverse characters from present-day George Mitchell to slave-era Frederick Douglas, all in a very believable way. Highly recommended. Would be a great book club read.

Three events in the history of Ireland, a visit by Frederick Douglas at the height of the potato famine, the first transatlantic flight, and the peace process brokered by George Mitchell, are tied together through the life of a young Irish girl named Lily and her descendants.
