This book is amazing. I'm rather speechless and blown away. So far, it's my favorite lgbtqia2s+ literature I've read. Definitely, everyone working in healthcare should read this to better understand the trauma of this community and to let trauma informed care guide practice. The protagonist Jess Goldberg is rendered endearing with hir bravery and kindness. The protagonist Jess Goldberg is rendered endearing with hir bravery and kindness. This book illustrates how living true to oneself, in the lgbtqia2s+ community, is a daily struggle which asks a tremendous amount of courage, heartache, and loneliness. The pain is hard to bear just reading about Jess. Life is hard; but it's harder for the queer community. And everything, always, against a lurking threat of violence. Hatred fueled violence which aims to silence the community and drive it underground. Jess became a lonely recluse, which was heart wrenching to witness, until love claimed hir again. This is the lived reality Leslie accomplished to share with the world through hir amazing story. A love story to shatter norms and to break the bounds of hatred.

I sat down wearily on a park bench. A homeless man picked through the garbage can nearby. I'd seen him before. His bright African print fabric skirt brushed the sidewalk. Gauzy material wrapped his upper body, slung across one shoulder like an East Indian sari. He glided with grace and dignity. For a moment he looked up to argue with someone only he could see. The guttural words he spoke were strangely beautiful. No one else on this planet understood his language. His hands fluttered near his face as he talked, like dark birds winging on warm currents of air.....Screeching tires woke me from my reverie. A woman's scream raised goose bumps on my arms. I raced to the corner....The woman sobbed. "They hit him on purpose, officer. There were four of them: two men and two women. The light was red. They stepped on the gas and ran him over. They were laughing." The words tumbled out, punctuated with sobs...."Calm down, lady," he soothed her. "It was only a bum." 312-313 ...more
