The Giver of Stars is based on The Pack Horse Librarian Project, part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). It's goal was to deliver books to remote areas of the Appalachian Mountains. It ran from 1935-1943. For the most part the librarians were women who rode mules or horses across rough terrain to deliver books to people who were often very poor or sick.
