Reading a Lionel Shriver book is like a full on assault of unwanted introspection, particularly if you are sensitive to what she is writing about, as has been the case now with both of her books I've read. The first was We Need to Talk About Kevin when I was stuck in a trailer in the Rocky Mountains with my mother who had just given up smoking. It wasn't pretty.
