Too sad for me, but others might like it because it is so odd, different and thought provoking.

This is a story about two people in love, but it does not have a happy ending. The book follows the two main characters to their deaths, which left me feeling sad. There were also many unanswered questions. It is a very unusual book. I’ve never read anything like it, so someone wanting a change of pace might like it. It includes descriptions of days in the lives of Clare and Henry. It starts in 1991, t Too sad for me, but others might like it because it is so odd, different and thought provoking.

There were also many unanswered questions. It is a very unusual book. I’ve never read anything like it, so someone wanting a change of pace might like it. It includes descriptions of days in the lives of Clare and Henry. It starts in 1991, the next scene is 1968, the next scene is 1988, the next scene is 1977, etc. They first meet when Henry, as an adult, travels back in time to 1968 and meets Clare who is 5 years old. He continues to meet her every so many months as she grows up. Finally, in 1991, they meet and stay in the same time period, Clare is 28 and Henry is 36. After that they marry. Henry continues to jump around in time. He has no control over it. He may be sitting at dinner, then his body disappears, he is naked in another place and time for a few hours. He needs to steal clothes and sometimes money in that other place. Then he is brought back to the present, naked again. He goes back in time and forward in time. Most of the scenes in the book are about the mundane events in everyday life, they cooked this, ate that, went to work, went dancing, got drunk, talked to people, etc.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
Clare spends her life waiting for Henry. She waits during her growing up years for each next time that she will see him. He dies at age 43, but Clare continues living until 82. The book isn’t clear about what she does in the meantime, but I got the feeling that she never fell in love with anyone else and just waited the rest of her life to die and to be with Henry in death. Too sad for me.

I was frustrated for Clare in that Henry never wanted to tell her what would happen in the future. But, he would give her dates in advance of when she could expect to see him. When he knew the date of his death, he never told her until right before it happened. I don’t know if this was good or bad. I think I would have wanted to know date of death in advance and a few other things as well.

A strange book as it flips to different days & how old he is. It took me a little time to get into it but i wasn't going to give up & i was so glad i didn't give up as it's a beautiful love story that is so different to anything i'll ever read again ...more
