Shelves: alpha-controlling-man, erotic, bad-boys-who-make-good

I do not like boxing. That noise from the spectators screaming for blood and the god awful sound of bones cracking is not a sport that I like.

So I started this book already disliking it and me being a cynic that I am, did not believe that I would finish it. .

Was I wrong? Yep so wrong. Katy Evans has an incredible writing style and talent. I loved the raw realness of the narrative of this book. It sucks you in and you believe in these characters, their emotion, and their pain and when you close ...more

Brooke Dumas is dragged to an Underground Fighting event by her best friend, Melanie, where she first comes into contact with the up and coming champion, Remington 'Riptide' Tate.

Brooke and Remington have many things in common. Brooke had been an athlete at the top of her sport when an injury took her out. Now she's moved on and made a life for herself in Sports Therapy. Remington has a past that would cripple anyone, but has ARC provided through NetGalley for an honest review.

Brooke Dumas is dragged to an Underground Fighting event by her best friend, Melanie, where she first comes into contact with the up and coming champion, Remington 'Riptide' Tate.

Brooke and Remington have many things in common. Brooke had been an athlete at the top of her sport when an injury took her out. Now she's moved on and made a life for herself in Sports Therapy. Remington has a past that would cripple anyone, but has survived and is striving to become champion in his sport, though there are those out to keep him from succeeding. With Pete, Riley and Diane, Remington has created a very close knit family of friends he can trust and count on to take care of him when he gets out of control.

Once Remington see's Brooke in the crowd at a fight, he knows she's the one for him. Hiring her, he has to get her to know him first before he can let her get too close. There are things about him that she has to know, because if he lets her get too close and she leaves him, she could break him. He will do anything for Brooke and she keeps him calm and level. But when someone threatens Brooke in a way that could hurt Remi, Brooke is the one who wants to protect him.

Will their desire to protect each other, cause miscommunication and a rift in their relationship? Will Remington spiral out of control?

This book reminded me of a by K. Bromberg book, in the way that there was a lot of internal dialogue by the heroine. It took a while for me to get into it. I didn't love it as much as everyone else seems to. I don't know if it's because I've been more in the mood for funny/sexy these days or not, but I was easily distracted from the story. Though I did love the relationship between Remington and his friends/staff. I think they were all really great at making sure he stayed healthy and as emotionally leveled as they could. When Brooke came on the scene, they were optimistically cautious. They took care of both Brooke and Remington to make sure everything worked out as best it could.

The story jumped around a lot. For example: One moment Brooke was talking about how Melanie and Riley disliked each other. Then she said they'd slept together and were text buddies. I was so confused about that as well as a few other things that were similar. Maybe it all confused me because I got easily distracted. I also was thrown by how Nora was in and out of rehab, and had a tattoo on her face removed so quickly.

I am interested to see where this story goes though. I could easily see where this could be the end of a Brooke and Remington story with other characters in their lives getting their own story and having a spattering of the two show up. But I guess their story continues, so I will read on. Hopefully it gets better. ...more

I haven't read a book like this in a while. It was unpredictable, and nerve wrecking at times. I found ,y self totally absorbed in the characters and I was putting myni pad down because I just couldn't believe what was happening. I found my self speed reading to get past the parts that were so frustrating. I wanted to scream at Brooke for her insecurity and I wanted to scream at them for being so young.
