I give this book five out of five stars; I will read this book again someday. It’s engaging, with a beautiful balance of character and story driven action. I did not want to put this book down and the minute I had to I was calculating the minutes until I could pick it back up. Blood-Song is one of those tales where the story strays from what the Inquisitor is learning. While the main character of the story, Vaelin, depicts his origin and up to the point where he is. He changes certain details as to keep the memories to himself; but the reader always knows.

It is an interesting origin story with in depth characterization, world building, and story creation.

This was a good read. I liked the fact that it chronicled his life and you got to see how a character can mean so many different things to so many different people and how people can misinterpret actions. It was fast paced with good characters. I found the romance/love story a bit thin, but that isn't what I read this book looking for, so im not that worried about it. Not sure if I will pick up the rest of the series, i'm kind of happy where it ended truth be told. ...more

This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I couldn't put it down and got annoyed when something pulled me out of this world that Anthony Ryan has created. I really can't wait for the next one to be released.

I really enjoyed the style that this has been written in. In some ways, it reminds of The Kingkiller Chronicles where you have a first-person narrative as well as a third-person. Watching Vaelin grow up and learning the background of the world as he does is a fantastic co ...more

I fit into the same category of those looking for something to come even remotely close to Patrick Rothfus in his The Kingkiller Chronicle.

Praise the Lord, for I have found something close in Anthony Ryan and his A Raven's Shadow trilogy!

I can't say I'm the first, nor the last, to gush over how epic the story line in this series has been. I was pulled in from the start and devoured the book in no time. ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the writing - it is, in a word, wonderful. Anthony Ryan has a marvellous way with words that keeps you turning the pages, not realising that it's now 4am and you have to get up to go to work in a few hours.

The story was also excellent - not your run of the mill fantasy fare by any means, it's interesting throughout, and the journey that the main character Vaelin goes through is both unexpected and satisfying.
