I loved this one. Well written, great characters, just plain great story. The only flaws for me were the occasional time shifts that were not easily identifiable as such, but perhaps that was the result of ebook editing. Some of the complexities of morality were truly heart wrenching.

Blood-Song is one of those tales where the story strays from what the Inquisitor is learning. While the main character of the story, Vaelin, depicts his origin and up to the point where he is. He changes certain details as to keep the memories to himself; but the reader always knows.

It is an interesting origin story with in depth characterization, world building, and story creation.

I picked this up because I found it on a site that suggested 13 Fantasy Novels With Odd Book covers, or something

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the writing - it is, in a word, wonderful. Anthony Ryan has a marvellous way with words that keeps you turning the pages, not realising that it's now 4am and you have to get up to go to work in a few hours.

The story was also excellent - not your run of the mill fantasy fare by any means, it's interesting throughout, and the journey that the main character Vaelin goes through is both unexpected and satisfying.

A familiar premise done really, really well. I wasn't sure I would like the device of the narration from the present, then jumping back into history telling, and then returning - but it works here. By the time the action of the book catches up with the protagonist and his historian, Vaelin Al Sorna is a faceted and deep character, a man of honor struggling to maintain his values in a world of ruthless leaders and clashing cultures. Great action, pacing, and I'm looking forward to reading the nex ...more

I love finding new epic fantasy series to dive into. This book had all the things I wanted- great characters, good setting, new interesting word, cool magic, war, love, friendship, loss. Honestly the perfect recipe for a great fantasy novel. I felt like this book lagged in certain parts, mainly from around the halfway point till like the 3/4 mark, where it picks up again. But apart from that I thoroughly enjoyed it and cannot wait to pick up the next book.
