Miéville presents a truly breathing cityscape in the wonderful and monstrous form of New Crobuzon. The entire novel absolutely oozes a sense of place, conjuring the tree-lined boulevards and smog-choked rivers in exquisite detail. It is a clearly lovingly-crafted world; well-thought out with all the incongruous alien details blending together perfectly, and he clearly takes delight in touring the reader through this world.
