Wow, talk about a debut bang out of the gate!
Chakraborty had me hooked from the first page with a strong narrative voice that expertly dips into free indirect discourse to get us inside the head of Nahri, living hand to mouth in Cairo, scamming and thieving from the wealthy, and trying to learn how to manage her wild healing talent.
One of her scams is to put together "tent healing" shows, though she doesn't believe in spirits, djinn, or the like. As part of her act she sings an eerie song that s ...more

I wanted to love this book. Middle Eastern flavored fantasy! Things are unabashedly Muslim! Totally different world!
Well...totally different. Also, much of it is incomprehensible. (What, precisely, is the difference between "daeva" and "djinn" and why did the djinn take that name on themselves again?) What is the form of government here?
Nahri starts out pretty good, and becomes a royal pain in the ass.
I can sympathize that the author wasn't trying to set up the obvious love triangle...but it's ...more

I really liked it until 2/3.
Nahri abruptly stood, as angry with herself as she was with Dara.
