Amazing. Some issues in the opening that I can't talk about without being spoilerrific, so I won't, but. Complex and majestic, dark and tragic. That which endures.

It's tricky to be objective and rational about a book which is just so demonstrably good. Employing a unique style and a gripping anachronic structure, The Fifth Season is one of the most ambitious books I've ever read. Fortunately, that ambition is more than met by the talents of author N.K. Jemisin.

I started this book with really high expectations. After all, N.K. Jemisin garnered resounding praises from the scifi/fantasy community and won awards to equal those praises, not just for this one novel but also for her other works. Besides that "The Broken Earth" has been likened to "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" writ large; I've read "Omelas" recently and that claim is quite the burden/favor to put on someone's work.

In the beginning I had a tough time with the multiple POVs, especially with the one in second person. And it was slow. But then mid-book the tension cranked up and I was totally into it. Even for a series I felt the ending was quite abrupt though. Will I read the next book? Maybe not but I am glad I read this one, my main motivation being because it was a Hugo winner.
