I hate them so much right now. I hate them so much I'm ready to go and seek out their correspondence in this world and finish them off.
This is one of the best books I've ever read. it's so good I don't want to put it down, but so "mäktig" I have to. Mäktig is a Swedish word used to describe food that is very rich, and filling, but it also means powerful. This is what this book is.
To me it's new and original. I have never read anything like this.
I can't say, of course, I'm a white Finnish woman ...more

Refreshing. Refreshing, refreshing, refreshing. Everything about this book is like taking a nice big gulp of outdoors air after being stuck inside for a long time. I do have to say that I have next to no experience with sci fi, so that could be a big part of this for me, but it's not the only reason. The second-person perspective, the narrative voice, the way the narrative gets woven together from so many separate parts, the rep of all sorts, etc... It's all just refreshing.
Honestly, there are ...more

Coming back to goodreads after being away for a while. So I'll skip the long review and just say I loved this series. So much. I don't even know where to start. It felt fresh in so many ways. From the authors voice to the characters to the world building. It came at a perfect time where i was feeling like I was reading the same sci-fi and fantasy stories with slightly different wrapping paper over and over. It was honestly one of the best series I've read in a good decade.

Wow.
Let's start with the end of the world...
The Fifth Season is Death
Jemisin is soooo much more than a "mere" genre writer. Her imagination is rivaled only by her command of all a novelist's tools, and she takes enormous risks which pay off in startling ways (I'd never think I'd like a book narrated in second person, but here, for her reasons, it works). There's no way I can sum up the plot without spoilers, and spoiling it would be a crime against literature. This book blew my mind, even mor ...more

I have complex feelings about this book, but overall it was excellent. It has a super interesting premise, albeit confusing at times, and I couldn't put it down. The author did an amazing job with diversity of characters, which is very refreshing to read in the fantasy/sci-fi genre.
I found some of the character development to be a bit lacking–I just didn't care about some of them. But the way the story was written (switching between 3 time periods) helped move the story along when some of the l ...more

I had a very hard time with this book at the beginning (to the point where I was wondering if I should continue), but I'm very glad I stuck it out -- this is one of the most imaginative things I've read in a while. Very affecting as well as fantastical.
