Pretty much everything I could ask for in a modern fantasy novel, and some things that I didn't even know I wanted! Imaginative and original, deeply rich world with an equally interesting cast of characters, a gripping plot, a constant sense of the looming end of the world (very suitable for the modern reader) and inclusive by default- sad puppies eat your hearts out!

Holy heck, this was good. A broken earth, with fractured characters, and a history that is more geology and archaeology than anything else, plus giant floating obelisks, institutionalized slavery, and a narrative device that sinks the reader deep into the heart and soul of one of the most damaged characters of all...

Is fantasy getting weird of late? We’re used to novels where we can essentially assume we’re in Francia until proven otherwise. But, perhaps in rebellion against Martin, I feel like there’s been more authors throwing us into the deep end and hoping we’ll make it to shore.
Which is cool. The Fifth Season is cool, with its inference-exposited social strata and its schizo tech levels and its walking earthquake-powered freaks. The heroine is fairly compelling, the writing stirring. All good.
