I love these books mostly because of the bromance. Michael J. Sullivan portrays an amazing friendship between Royce and Hadrian. The banter is funny, the tone is light and as a reader I immediately wanted to spend more time with these people.

The writing is nothing special, but if you're in the mood for something light, easy and far less complex than the usual epic fantasy, this is for you. The perfect book after a long day and a great fantasy romp. ...more

This volume has two books combined and if I knew from the beggining I would got them separately, but no loss.

So, being two in one, the rating will be for each book in part.

The first one is kind of an introduction to the fantasy world were we have all the classic menu and creatures alike.

But bear in mind, not all appear now in this book. So the first volume it`s a way to establish a story, to introduces the characters, a pair of thieves in the style of more famous, Fritz Leiber`s, duo, Fafhrd and This volume has two books combined and if I knew from the beggining I would got them separately, but no loss.

But bear in mind, not all appear now in this book. So the first volume it`s a way to establish a story, to introduces the characters, a pair of thieves in the style of more famous, Fritz Leiber`s, duo, Fafhrd and Grey Mouser.

The first story it`s a little light on the intrigue side, there are killings and conspirations, some upside downs in the actions, but, overall, I felt that it was a three stars book for me.

But in the second one, the story it`s more complex, moving along in the steps of the first, so there are truly related.

Definitely the second one it`s much better than the first, the story reminded me of the second volume from Glen Cook where there is a mystery monster haunting a human village, but this story has it`s originality and still it`s complex and quite interesting to read.

The dialogues aren`t so funny like in Abercrombie`s world, but still there are a lot of good moments to have with some of the POv`s way of thinking.

Overall much better than the first one and the main effect is that now I`m curios to see were the story will go from this moment forward.

And another thing, there is a very thin line between good and evil, the so called evil, for example, the main here is the Church (yeah, I know! rolling eyes!) , but they want the power for the good of the people, but still they destroy without mercy their targets in order to achieve this goal. So this is a bad or a good thing?! Definitely murder is, but, like our days, in the end, what`s more important? The good lifes of a hand of people or the ones of the mases?!

Yes, definitely Sullivan has it`s own strong points.

Four stars in the end.

Not great, because it has has some holes, but still a good effort that worth a reading and you`ll see, you`ll be hooked on this story in no time! ...more

When I started reading this, I kept thinking to myself, this is good-ish. But the story was moving a bit fast, details remained scanty, the characters a little one dimensional. It was all just a little pat. And I kept thinking that I should finish it quick to get back to Gentlemen Bastards Book 3. However the more I read, the more I couldn't stop.
