O'Brien fictionalizes himself in this series of short stories about the Vietnam War. While not every story was my favorite, each was impactful and emotional and communicated the messiness and pain and lasting trauma of war. I really appreciated this one.

A shame, perhaps. I suspect that if the two of them had not been at each other’s ambitious throats, they might’ve been good friends. At the very least, they would’ve earned each other’s respect.

This is a powerful book,a collection of stories based on Tim O'Brien's time in Vietnam during the war. O'Brien says that only by telling made-up stories is he able to tell the truth about what he and the men who were there with him experienced. The stories are confessional, reflective, and honest. I highly recommend this be read by any politician wishing to continue our present wars or start new ones.
