After North America was almost destroyed, the nation of Paem emerges. There are 12 districts which they keep under a tight rein by staging The Hunger Games each year. Where two "tributes" from each district fight to the death in an arena. This has become great entertainment. This year, Kaitliss' sister is chosen as tribute so she steps in to take Prim's place.

WOW!
This book was exciting, disturbing, and really difficult for me to put down.
America has lived through another Civil War, essentially, and now consists of the Capitol, and 12 "districts".
Wealth and power is held by the Capitol and a yearly event is mandated to remind everyone of the squashed revolution and the 13th district which was annihilated.

However, like I tell my grandchildren about trying foods they don’t like again and again, I have to remember to keep trying different genres of books I think I don’t like. I have read several books lately that were classified as Young Adult that I enjoyed very much. So once again I learn not to limit myself. I am so torn with this book. I think it is brilliant and has the makings of a classic. But it is disturbing. It is addicting and difficult to put down. Collins captures human emotion in a way that not many authors can do. But it is children killing children. I felt under prepared to read this book. Everyone recommended it with such praise. Nobody ever mentioned disturbing. However, I loved it and would recommend it to others, but perhaps with a small preface.

I really enjoyed this book. The plot and characters command your attention from the beginning, and it's a relentless ride until the end! Every possible emotion was pulled from me throughout the story. I'm looking forward to the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire.
