What Members Thought

An engaging read... an emotionally charged ride, as one has come to expect from Hosseini's works. I had heard and read that this was the author's best work so far, but for me it remained a notch or two below The Kite Runner. The story is fragmented across a bit too many characters and spread over one too many generations, to retain ones excitement. But despite this slight glitch, it remains a work to be savoured.. :)

I really enjoyed this book, though there were so many characters I could hardly keep them straight (this is where the x-ray feature on my kindle really came in handy). Again a beautiful interwoven story. I was initially wary of reading Hosseni, his stories are so heart-rendingly tragic but this one was surprisingly gentle. It doesnt have absolute blackness of character or paralysing despair. Life goes on despite the losses n challenges. It didnt bring Afganistan alive as his other books had done. But i was kind of relieved to have read this one n felt like chiding myself for avoiding it for so long.

Khaled Hosseini is an exceptional storyteller. And the mountains echoed is, like his other two books, beautifully written. Having said that, I like this book least of the three. The background of Afghan wars, which lays the foundation of all his books, seemed to me a bit blur in this one. Also, it was not as compelling a read as the other two.
